Stella-Della-Valley, October '99 - Ottsville, PA

Set up on our other side was our buddy Steve. Pictured is his scope, a 6" Russian Maksutov-Newtonian. On Saturday night it easily held Jupiter and Saturn steady with a 5mm TeleVue Radian. In fact, it performed well with Steve's three other Radians, which he was lucky enough to win up at Stellafane this past summer.

Another nicely done scope was this large (5"-ish) refractor. You don't see too many homemade refractors around and this appears to be one of the best. Keith Love, the owner, has also built a Dobsonian around a set of 13.1" Coulter optics and a reproduction of Galileo's famous first telescope, which placed up at Stellafane two summers ago.

At left was one of, if not the largest telescopes there. This 20" Obsession will make you cry if you have a Dobsonian 10" and smaller...your mirror will look so small after inspecting the Optical Tube Assembly of this monster. All these commercially-made large aperture Truss-Dob telescopes exhibit quality craftmanship and this scope is no exception.

Another friend of our's, Rich, was busily describing his 18" Truss-Dob. This scope was constructed by Rich from an Astrosystems Tele-Kit while he waited for the Pegasus mirror to arrive. Since completing the scope Rich has added the Tech2000 Dob Driver and roller-bearings in place of teflon on all surfaces. What a scope!
